Newcastle have been dumped out of the FA Cup on their own patch by Cambridge United of League 1.

Eddie Howe played a strong side but Joe Ironside’s goal was enough to win the game after a performance where his side could not put the ball in the back of the net.

Cambridge also caused Newcastle far more problems than a third tier side should have done and Alan Shearer did not hold back in his assessment of the performance.

He congratulated Cambridge on their victory but described the display as ‘pathetic’ and was clearly angry based on how he signed off his message.

Shearer’s BBC colleague Gary Lineker shone light on his disappointed reaction to the result, on an afternoon when his own beloved Leicester City sealed smooth progression to the next round by beating Watford.

The Premier League is of course the priority for Newcastle but this performance was not good enough and it could have an impact on morale in the survival fight.

There is also the chance that potential new signings will not exactly react too favourably to getting beaten in front of a full house against a League 1 side.

There is plenty of work for Howe to do and plenty of need for new arrivals in the transfer market on an afternoon which underlined the scale of Newcastle’s issues.
