Chris Wood’s arrival at Newcastle United has been confirmed.

Wood has signed a two-and-a-half year contract and will be able to play against Watford on Saturday afternoon.

Legendary Magpies striker Alan Shearer wasted no time in welcoming Wood to the club on Twitter.

Wood is a different profile of striker to Shearer, but they are both towering presences up front and the New Zealander is the kind of player the St James’ Park faithful should take to quickly.

He has been brought in to score the goals to keep Newcastle safe from relegation. That represents pressure but Wood can handle it.

There has been plenty of chatter about this move but Wood is a player who knows how to score goals in the Premier League.

On top of that, he has been doing it for Burnley, who do not create a huge amount of chances. That is likely to be similar to the brief at Newcastle.

Of course, Newcastle have also weakened a relegation rival by making this move, and it could make all the difference in the relegation dogfight.

It was clear after the FA Cup loss to Cambridge that Newcastle needed a striker and that is exactly what they have gone out and got.

They have one who knows the demands of the Premier League and can come in and hit the ground running, starting against Watford.

This could be a big moment in Newcastle’s season and Shearer will certainly hope that Wood can follow in his footsteps and score the goals which send the Magpies’ fans mad.
