Dan Burn is yet to taste defeat in a Newcastle United shirt, and his impact at the club has been lauded by Toon legend Alan Shearer.

The boyhood Newcastle fan has been a colossus at the heart of Eddie Howe’s defence since being signed from Brighton on transfer deadline day.

From the five games that the 29-year-old has played in, Newcastle have won four and drawn once.

The Magpies number 33’s header back across goal against Southampton on Thursday night allowed Bruno Guimaraes to produce the moment of brilliance to clinch another three points for Howe’s side.

The dominant Burn is developing a positive understanding and partnership with ball-playing centre-back Fabian Schar.

Their partnership is proving the bedrock of the Toon Army’s side and the pair will have to be at their best ahead of today’s difficult test at Stamford Bridge.

But the Premier League’s all-time top goalscorer, Shearer, has heralded Burn for helping patch and shore up a Newcastle backline that was leaking goals left, right and centre prior to his arrival.

Not only has Burn brought a physical presence to our defence, but he has also injected leadership, communication and assurance as well.

Similar to Schar, Burn is comfortable on the ball and brings calmness to the rest of the team. Having the towering defender marshalling our backline instils a confidence which radiates throughout his teammates.

Burn has already faced Chelsea twice this season when at Brighton and on both occasions the scoreline finished 1-1.

Howe’s side are inevitably going to come under pressure at times against the European and world champions, and Burn’s recent success in frustrating Thomas Tuchel’s side could prove crucial in guiding us to yet another positive result.

But just like Shearer has rightly stated, Dan Burn has been a revelation since arriving at St James’ Park and hopefully he produces yet another man mountain performance against Chelsea this afternoon.
