Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer believes that big things could be on the horizon for Anthony Gordon.
The 23-year-old was almost the Magpies’ hero against Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday night, giving his side the lead in the second half after some smart work by Miguel Almiron.
It was Anthony Gordon‘s ninth goal of the season, as he continues to enjoy a spectacular first full season in a Newcastle United shirt.
The winger has arguably been the Magpies’ best player during what has been an inconsistent campaign, and it is a season that could have a very happy ending.
Newcastle are still in the FA Cup thanks to Martin Dubravka’s efforts in the penalty shootout at Ewood Park, while England are going to be competing in the European Championship in Germany.
The Three Lions will be looking to go all the way, but it remains to be seen if any Newcastle players will be involved in Gareth Southgate’s squad.
Kieran Trippier almost certainly will be, but there are also loud calls for Gordon to win a place on the plane.

Before Newcastle’s FA Cup match with Blackburn kicked off, the BBC One panel discussed Gordon’s form in black and white. Host Gary Lineker then asked Alan Shearer if the former Everton player had an outside chance of going to the Euros this summer.
“Yeah, definitely,” he said.
“I think when you look at that position, he’s up against two or three other players but he’s certainly put himself into contention.
“His work rate has been superb. His goals have been very good. And he’s versatile. If you’re struggling, he can play down the middle as well. Not his favourite position, but he can do that also.”
Gordon’s Newcastle form should result in England callup
Gordon has been absolutely amazing for Newcastle this season, for multiple reasons.
Firstly, he has been decisive in the final third. He has got nine goals and seven assists in all competitions, proving he has become a much more ruthless player since leaving Everton.
Secondly, he is durable. Newcastle have had so many injuries this season, yet Gordon has been fit for every single game. The only match he did not feature in was the 2-2 draw with West Ham, which he was suspended for.
Thirdly, as Shearer points out, he is versatile. He can play on either flank or through the middle and he will still be a threat.
He has to be in contention for a first ever England callup, and you would like to think he will receive that during the next international break in March. And hopefully that will then lead to him representing England at the Euros at the end of the season.
