Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has named his Premier League team of the week, and it includes as many as three Toon players.

Shearer had to include a few Newcastle players after the 2-0 win over Manchester United. It was arguably the Magpies’ best performance of the season.

So many of Eddie Howe’s players excelled on Sunday. It was one of those games where it was difficult to pick a player of the match, such was the level of performance.

Shearer has already expressed his delight at Alexander Isak’s performance, but did not name him in his weekly best XI. The forward roles went to Julian Alvarez, Jack Grealish and Gabriel Jesus, who had much more impactful weekends than the Swede.

But while Isak was not included, three of his Toon teammates were.

Newcastle trio in Alan Shearer’s team of the week

Shearer has included Kieran Trippier, Sven Botman and Joe Willock in his Premier League team of the week. There are no arguments from us – they were all tremendous in the win over Manchester United.

Trippier ensured Marcus Rashford had a quiet game, and produced a wonderful delivery to allow Callum Wilson to score Newcastle’s second. As for Botman, he was immense at the back, and his front-foot defending played a role in Willock’s opener.

Speaking of Willock, Shearer has sent a message to Gareth Southgate about the 23-year-old.

He wrote: “Never stopped running, threatening on the counter time and again, and deservedly scoring Newcastle’s opening goal. England, are you watching?”

An England callup is surely on the way for Willock. He is enjoying a brilliant season, and has been much more impressive than the likes of Conor Gallagher, who is consistently in the Three Lions’ squad.

Willock has been very open about his desire to play for his country, and believes he has the ability to be an international player. Newcastle fans will absolutely agree, having witnessed his startling development since he first arrived on Tyneside.

All Willock can do is continue playing well. The next international break is at the end of the season, meaning the midfielder can solely focus on getting Newcastle into the Champions League. If he can do that, a phone call from Southgate will surely be on the horizon.
