Alan Shearer has outlined what PIF need to do at Newcastle United this summer.

After qualifying for the Champions League on the final day of the Premier League season, it could prove to be a transformative summer at St James’ Park.

Eddie Howe wants four new signings, as they aim to bolster a squad that desperately needs more depth ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Bruno Guimaraes says Newcastle United need more signings after struggling to cope with the demands of the Champions League last season, and Alan Shearer agrees.

Alan Shearer wants ‘big hitters’ to join Newcastle United

Speaking on the latest episode of the Rest Is Football podcast, the Newcastle United legend addressed what the club need to do this summer.

Shearer is looking for ‘big hitters’ to arrive, as PIF prepare to splash the cash.

“They want to go to the next level,” he said.

“If they want to remain where they are, in and around the top four or five all season and challenge for trophies, they have to keep going.

“They have got to get in two or three big hitters who are going to improve the first-team. If they do that, they are not far away from challenging.”

Micah Richards then asked Shearer what positions those ‘big hitters’ need to be in.

“Another forward, depending on who they sell or keep,” he said.

“Probably a right-sided midfielder. Maybe another centre-half. If they can add that, I really do not think they will be far away.”

How much money Newcastle United could spend this summer

For Shearer to get his wish, Newcastle United will need to spend a lot of money.

Fortunately, their PSR position is much healthier than it was 12 months ago.

The Magpies are boosted by their lack of activity during the previous three transfer windows, while the departures of Miguel Almiron and Lloyd Kelly mean Newcastle have even greater capacity to spend.

Now, with the financial rewards of being in the Champions League confirmed, the club are in a great position to attack the summer transfer window.

It has been reported by the i Paper that Newcastle United could spend up to £250million.

That would surely be enough to get the three ‘big hitters’ that Shearer is looking for, plus the fourth signing that Howe wants.

Whether Newcastle United will sign a striker

One of those signings could depend on what happens to Newcastle’s current attackers. While Shearer thinks Alexander Isak will stay, the future of Callum Wilson remains unclear.

Wilson was emotional inside St James’ Park on Sunday, as he appeared to wave goodbye to the crowd following Newcastle’s loss to Everton.

However, it has since been reported that Wilson is in contract talks with Newcastle over a new incentivised deal.

If Wilson does go, the Magpies will need to bring in a replacement. Newcastle want to sign Liam Delap, and have spoken to him about a £30million move to the North East.
