Newcastle United put on their best display of the season to take a point from their Premier League clash against Manchester City.

Newcastle and Manchester City were very much in two different places heading into Saturday’s match. The Magpies were coming off the back of an “awful” 3-1 defeat to Fulham whereas City had just snatched a last-minute equaliser against title rivals Arsenal.

However, despite being big underdogs, Eddie Howe‘s side put on a fantastic performance at St James’ Park to stun the reigning champions.

The story of the season up to that point had been poor performances with good results, but Newcastle looked back to their energetic best against City.

A “relentless” Anthony Gordon stole the headlines after earning and scoring the penalty, but Lewis Hall was an unsung hero against City.

Alan Shearer names Lewis Hall in team of the week

Newcastle may not have taken all three points from their draw against City, but it was certainly an eye-catching performance and a reminder that the Magpies are hunting down another top-four finish.

Club legend Alan Shearer named his Premier League team of the week on Tuesday afternoon and only Lewis Hall made the list for Newcastle.

Hall was named in a back three that also included Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven and Leicester’s James Justin.

On Hall, Shearer added: “A really solid performance, helping to limit a free-scoring Manchester City side to just a single goal.”

Hall certainly was one of Newcastle’s standout players on the day, helping a well-organised Newcastle defence keep out an in-form Haaland while also offering plenty in possession and further up the pitch.

Lewis Hall will be a star at Newcastle

Hall is very quickly justifying his £28m transfer fee this season. He is still just 20 years old but is already beginning to lock down the left-back spot as his own.

There has been whispers that Paul Mitchell criticised the Hall deal, but the young defender is certainly making him eat his words if that is the case.

Howe deserves credit for the way he has integrated Hall into the team, and he is now starting to fulfil his lofty potential.

There are plenty of positions Newcastle will want to improve and address over the next few transfer windows, but in Hall they have a left-back for the next decade.
