Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer felt that his former club should have been given a penalty in the clash against Manchester City.

Eddie Howe’s side were trailing against Pep Guardiola’s side after just five minutes following a breakdown in communication between Martin Dubravka and Ciaran Clark, which allowed Ruben Dias the freedom of St James’ Park, to head home inside the penalty area.

Joao Cancelo scored a screamer, in the 27th minute, to double the Premier League holders’ lead.

But there was controversy when Ryan Fraser was brought down by Ederson. Cancelo took the ball away from the on-rushing Brazilian, but Fraser was taken out.

The Scotland international wasn’t in control of the ball, but he was taken out.

Referee Martin Atkinson waved the game on and there was no intervention forthcoming from VAR, which left Match of the Day pundit Shearer furious.

Commentating live on the game for Sky Sports, Don Goodman also felt it was a clear penalty.

Goodman said: “VAR will have to look at that. It’s clumsy. It’s a penalty! Surely! He has cleaned him out.

“That is an outrage. You cannot slide into an opponent and just clean him out. It’s a penalty.”

Newcastle went into half-time 2-0 down against the league leaders.
