Alan Shearer was delighted to see three Newcastle United players in the England starting XI on Sunday.

The Three Lions beat Republic of Ireland 5-0 at Wembley, with Lee Carsley ending his reign as interim manager in style. And he also did it with a helping hand from Newcastle United.

Anthony Gordon once again started in attack for England. On his ninth appearance for his country, Gordon scored his first England goal.

He was alongside Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento, who started for the first ever time for England. For Livramento, it was his full debut, while Hall won his second cap after making his debut off the bench against Greece.

To see three Newcastle United players in the England starting XI was remarkable, and Toon legend Alan Shearer was very happy with how they played.

Shearer was asked about how he thought the Newcastle players did on the latest episode of The Rest Is Football podcast.

“Yeah, I thought they did really well,” he said.

“I mean, Lewis Hall came on in the Greece game and then had a start tonight, as did Livramento and Gordon. So yeah, good night for Newcastle.

“Can anyone name the last time when three Newcastle players started an England game? It was 1997, I think it was, against Georgia. Me, Rob Lee and David Batty.

“So yeah, I thought the three boys did well for England tonight, Newcastle boys, yeah.”

Newcastle trio send message to possible future signings

As Shearer says, the Newcastle United lads made a bit of history on Sunday night. It was the first time since 1997 that three Newcastle United players started for England.

That is quite the statistic, and can be used as a message to prospective future signings.

In the recent past, Newcastle United players have rarely been able to get into the England side. Things only started to change after the takeover and the arrival of Kieran Trippier.

Now players are making their Three Lions debut after representing Newcastle, proving that St James’ Park is a place you can come to help achieve your international dreams.

It is further proof of Eddie Howe improving players. He is elevating talent to a level that they are deemed good enough for England. It is a type of level that we have not seen for a long time on Tyneside.

The likes of Gordon, Hall and Livramento playing for England is a testament to Howe’s coaching ability, while it could also help the club’s recruitment when it comes to domestic players.

Come to Newcastle United and make your England dreams come true, just like Gordon and co. That will be Paul Mitchell’s message, as he continues his quest to revolutionise Newcastle’s recruitment.
