Alan Shearer explains why Newcastle fans should be optimistic against Chelsea

Newcastle United are going to be the underdogs against Chelsea this weekend.

The Magpies have not won any of their previous four Premier League games, while the last time Newcastle United won at Stamford Bridge was 2012.

Eddie Howe‘s side are going to be up against it, while Chelsea look so much better under Enzo Maresca. They have started the season brightly, with Paul Merson tipping Chelsea to beat Newcastle on Sunday.

Chris Sutton also thinks Chelsea will win against Newcastle, with the Magpies recently struggling for goals.

Alexander Isak was out of form against Brighton, while Newcastle will be without Callum Wilson once again this weekend.

His injury woes are set to continue, but there is still reason for Toon fans to be optimistic.

Alan Shearer makes Chelsea vs Newcastle prediction

That is the view of Alan Shearer, who is trying to look at the positives ahead of Newcastle United’s Premier League trip to Chelsea.

As part of his column for the Metro, Shearer has explained why the Magpies can improve, as he backs his beloved Newcastle United to pick up a point from their trip to the capital.

“Newcastle can get something at Stamford Bridge with another week on the training ground and no midweek game,” he said.

“Eddie Howe will have plenty of time to work on their finishing and final ball this week and if they can improve on that, with the confidence of Anthony Gordon signing a new contract, they can go to Chelsea and get a point which will hopefully kick-start their season.

“Chelsea impressed me at Liverpool and are showing signs of progress, so I am expecting this to be a tight game on Sunday.”

Anthony Gordon will be eager to shine for Newcastle

Shearer makes a good point. Newcastle have had a full week of training ahead of the Chelsea game, while their preparations for Brighton were disrupted by the international break.

Howe will have seen what went wrong last weekend, and set about fixing those issues ahead of Chelsea.

On top of that, Anthony Gordon will no doubt be eager to justify his new contract.

Gordon signed his new Newcastle contract this week, putting an end to the speculation over his future after an uncomfortable summer.

Eddie Howe think the new contract will help Gordon improve, and that will hopefully start on Sunday.

That is what Shearer is anticipating, with the Newcastle United legend confident that Howe’s side can get at least a point from their trip to Stamford Bridge.
