Eddie Howe is enjoying a great season with Newcastle United, and Toon legend Alan Shearer has explained exactly why he is so special.

The 44-year-old has had a remarkable 12 months on Tyneside. It started with a survival mission, and it ended with the Magpies chasing Champions League football.

The turnaround at St James’ Park has been astonishing, and there are plenty of reasons behind the improvement. A big one has been the ownership. They have lifted the mood around the club, and also invested huge amounts of money.

New signings such as Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes have had a huge impact since moving to the North East.

But it isn’t just down to the new signings. The players Howe inherited have improved massively, and his team are a perfectly cohesive unit that knows exactly what it’s doing.

Newcastle have the perfect blend of team spirit and individual ability, and it has taken us into third position after 15 Premier League games.

Howe has always been a special coach, but his reputation has increased dramatically in recent months. And Shearer has heaped praise on the former Bournemouth man.

Shearer on what makes Howe ‘great’

Newcastle’s all-time leading goalscorer has been speaking to the Athletic, and explained why Howe is so good at his job.

“What Eddie is doing is rinsing every single ounce of ability out of every single player,” he said.

“That’s the sign of a great coach. He and his staff deserve immense credit. It’s so impressive. He is getting everything out of them.”

That’s why Howe is so special

This is what makes Newcastle such a strong team. There are no passengers. Every player has an important role, and does it to the best of their ability.

There is competition for places which means no room for complacency. That wasn’t the case in the past.

While Newcastle have the finances to go to the top of the footballing ladder, money doesn’t win you anything. You need the right people in place. And we have got exactly that in Howe.

Shearer thinks he is a great coach, and he couldn’t be more right. We see how good a coach he is every time Newcastle plays. Every time Almiron scores, it’s a testament to Howe’s coaching ability. Every time Joelinton dominates a midfield battle, it’s a testament to Howe’s coaching ability.

Newcastle struck gold when they stumbled upon Howe last year, and are continuing to reap the benefits.
