Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes has won the North East Player Of The Year award for 2022 – much to the delight of Alan Shearer.
It was confirmed in January that Bruno would receive the accolade, and he lifted the trophy on Sunday night at the North East Football Writers’ Association annual dinner.
He won the honour ahead of Sunderland’s Ross Stewart and Toon teammate Kieran Trippier, who came second and third respectively.
The Brazilian is a deserving winner, and was without a doubt the best player in the North East for 2022. He had a seismic impact after his £35million arrival in January, helping Newcastle avoid relegation then challenge for Europe this season.
It is a joy to watch Bruno play in a black and white shirt, and Toon legend Alan Shearer is ecstatic to see the midfielder recognised for his performances.

After winning the award, Bruno delivered a passionate message to Toon fans, expressing his love for the club and the area.
He received a response from Shearer, who was quick to congratulate him on the honour.
Newcastle’s record scorer replied on Twitter: “Well deserved”.
No one deserves it more than Bruno
As Shearer says, Bruno certainly deserves this accolade. There is no one in North East football who is more deserving.
Stewart had a great 2022 in a red and white shirt, but not at the same standard as Bruno. Meanwhile, third-placed Trippier spent a large portion of 2022 out with an injury, despite playing brilliantly either side of his broken foot.
But when you look at every player from the North East clubs, there could only be one player of the year for 2022. Bruno has been a picture of consistency, playing like a complete midfielder in Eddie Howe’s side.
There have been spectacular goals, mesmeric passes and tasty tackles, and a bond with Toon fans that grows week by week.
Shearer is a huge fan of Bruno, and has been blown away by multiple performances from the midfielder since his arrival more than a year ago.
He is the 2022 North East Player Of The Year, and don’t bet against him winning it again in 2023.
