Aaron Ramsdale has sent a message to those who are doubting Newcastle United ahead of the new season.
Ramsdale is so far one of only two summer signings that Newcastle United have made during a difficult few months for the club.
Despite coming off their greatest season in living memory, Newcastle have struggled to sign players this summer.
Still, both the aforementioned England international and Anthony Elanga are already through the door – while AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw could soon follow.
Ramsdale has joined Newcastle on loan from Southampton and the deal is thought to include an option to buy next summer.
The 27-year-old made his debut during Newcastle’s 2-2 draw with Espanyol, saving a penalty in his first game at St James’ Park as a Toon player.
After that, he sent a message.
Aaron Ramsdale’s message to Newcastle United doubters
The goalkeeper admitted that people were “writing the club” off ahead of the new campaign.
He added that such a feeling will only unite the team and the supporters under Eddie Howe, who has certainly come through adversity before.
It’s worth remembering that the club endured a difficult summer last year too and the Newcastle United manager still ended up leading them to a first major domestic trophy in 70 years and also back into the Champions League.
“This club had a great season last year, and I can only see it happening again,” he told BBC Radio Newcastle.
“People are, I think, already writing the club off and that will make these fans and this team stronger.
“It’s something that we’ll relish all year.”
Will Aaron Ramsdale start for Newcastle United this season?
Ramsdale isn’t expected to start for Newcastle straight away this season, with Howe reportedly set to back Nick Pope.
That could change, of course. It’s a long season and for as good as Pope has been since his arrival from Burnley in the summer 2022, there remain question marks about his distribution.
Ramsdale may not have been first choice this summer, with Newcastle instead targeting James Trafford before his move to Manchester City.
However, the attitude he’s already shown at least offers signs that he’s going to make a positive impact.
