Aaron Hickey committed to Bologna despite links with Newcastle

Bologna left-back Aaron Hickey has made it clear that he wishes to remain at the club next season. The Scotland international has been linked with Newcastle United per Fabrizio Romano’s Twitter account.

He’s had an impressive campaign for the Italian side. Hickey has played more minutes than any other teenager this season who has played in the top five leagues in Europe. Furthermore, the potential Newcastle transfer target has five goals to his name and an assist.

Speaking about his future, the 19-year-old said to The Daily Record: “The important thing is to keep my head down and keep improving with a coaching staff that are helping me a lot.

“Now I think about my future only here in Bologna.

“The way we play helps me a lot compared to what I was used to in Scotland. In terms of my progress, I have to keep improving to gain experience and help the team.

“But personally, I think I still need to improve both in the attacking and defensive parts of my game.”

They seemed to have missed out on Hickey, but Eddie Howe has hinted previously Jamal Lewis still has a future

With Hickey committing to Bologna, Newcastle United look set to miss out on his services. Luckily we have a very consistent left-back in Matt Targett who joined on loan from Aston Villa.

His loan runs out at the end of the season. But the Magpies should look to sign him permanently this summer; he’s earned it with the performances he’s put in.

However, the Toon will need other options in this position. Perhaps Hickey would’ve been signed to fill this role. But Eddie Howe has hinted that Jamal Lewis has a future with the club.

The Northern Ireland international hasn’t played since December. But he has had a couple of injury problems, so maybe next season Howe wants to give him a chance.

Selling him this summer would mean that Newcastle almost certainly make a loss on him. The Magpies bought Lewis for £15million from Norwich (Sky Sports). No club would pay that fee or higher for him considering how lacklustre he’s been for the Toon.

Newcastle should keep their eyes on Hickey. Perhaps he’ll creep back onto the radar and emerge as a Newcastle transfer target. He’s definitely looking like one for the future, that’s for sure.
