According to 90min, Newcastle United aren’t the only Premier League club interested in signing Matt Targett this summer, with Leeds also keen.

The left-back joined Newcastle on loan in January, and has been excellent since his temporary move from Aston Villa. Every performance make you wonder even more why Steven Gerrard decided to let him leave.

But their loss has been our gain, and Targett has fit in seamlessly at St James’ Park. He’s barely put a foot wrong since joining, and will hopefully become a permanent Magpie in the summer.

According to reports, Newcastle have a deal in principle agreed with Aston Villa worth £15million. However, there are other clubs interested in the 26-year-old.

Leeds, Leicester and Wolves like Targett, but he wants Newcastle move

90min state that three other Premier League clubs are interested in Targett – Leeds United, Leicester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

However, the report adds that the defender’s preferred option is to join Newcastle permanently.

That’s good news for Toon fans. A lot of supporters will be keen for Targett to return next season, such has been his importance since his January arrival.

He was probably the least talked about recruit. Bruno Guimaraes and Kieran Trippier were blockbuster signings. Chris Wood arrived for big money. Dan Burn was the local lad coming home.

But Targett has been pivotal at times, producing consistent performances week after week.

Interest from Leeds, Leicester and Wolves should serve as a warning to the Toon – if we don’t sign him, someone else will.

But Targett wants to stay, and deserves to continue being a part of this exciting new era for Newcastle United.
