Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles has spoken about the impact the new owners have had since they’ve arrived. Just a few months into the regime and it seems that things are already a lot better than they were under Mike Ashley.

According to the skipper, Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi are much more directly involved with the club. He told The Chronicle, “That’s been really important. I didn’t think it would be because I’ve never really experienced it but experiencing such a close relationship, knowing you can always ring or message … they have a lot of involvement.

“Because they’ve done so much for us and for Newcastle, we want to do so much for them. They’re lovely people as well.”

Lascelles’ explanation speaks volumes to how Newcastle turned around their form in 2022

Last year Newcastle were seen as very likely to go down. But since 2022, the Magpies went on a nine-game unbeaten run which lifted them out of the bottom three and up the table.

The new signings in January certainly helped like Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn and Matt Targett. However, current players who were there when Eddie Howe arrived such as Joelinton, Joe Willock and Ryan Fraser.

As for Lascelles, he’s struggled to make Newcastle’s starting XI. Dan Burn and Fabian Schar have been the go-to pair for Howe. It’s a testament to the skipper’s attitude that he’s still speaking so highly of the situation at the club despite him personally getting less game time.

Also, what’s interesting is how Ghodoussi and Staveley have developed a close relationship with the team. In fact, it’s an indicator has to how distant Ashley was from the side when he was there. Lascelles saying that he’s not experienced something like that suggests how much the attitude has changed from the new owners.

Additionally, this style of running Newcastle has had benefits to the team’s performances on the pitch. The players will want to give it their all to impress the owners. What also might be a factor is the wealth the club now has. They have the cash to bring in new players, so the current squad will want to keep their place.
