Paris Saint-Germain look set to beat Newcastle United to the signing of a striker for the second summer in a row according to Fabrizio Romano as the French side close in on Sergio Ramos from Benfica.
Last summer Newcastle were hotly tipped to sign Goncalo Ramos from Benfica for around £25million but the deal never really got close to completion.
By the time the January window came around, Ramos’ value had more than tripled. Now it looks like a deal worth £69million is going to be enough to see the Portuguese star leave Benfica for PSG as reported by Fabrizio Romano.
Romano is prepping a ‘here we go’ tweet for Ramos to PSG
Taking to Twitter/X Romano confirmed: “Paris Saint-Germain are closing in on Gonçalo Ramos deal! Agreement very close, final details being sorted — it could completed this week”
Last season the 22-year-old made 47 appearances for Benfica, scoring 27 goals and providing 12 assists. He also announced himself on the international scene replacing Cristiano Ronaldo in the Portugal line-up in the World Cup game against Switzerland where he scored a hat-trick and provided an assist in a 6-1 win.

It was after that World Cup game that saw Benfica slap a £104million valuation on the star to fend off interest from Newcastle and Manchester United.
Newcastle’s links to Ramos this summer haven’t been as intense as last year
This summer Ramos’ name has been mentioned a few times with regards to Newcastle but the interest has never felt as strong as it did last year.

I think the regret was not signing him last year before his value shot up, but now that he’d cost three times what Newcastle were hoping to pay last year it’s not really fair to say that PSG have stolen a march on us this time like they did last year with Hugo Ekitike.
As much as it would have been exciting to see Ramos in the black and white next season, Newcastle need more cover at the back before they start looking at more attacking options.
