£4m Newcastle player now has ‘hidden’ injury, he’s been playing anyway

Newcastle United appear to have a fresh injury concern just as two players have returned.

Sunday’s defeat to Tottenham Hotspur saw Sean Longstaff and Callum Wilson return to fitness, which is a huge boost ahead of Wednesday night’s Champions League game against AC Milan at St James’ Park.

However, it now appears that Newcastle have a fresh injury issue to contend with, and it is to a player who has struggled over the past few days.

Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka struggling with injury

Martin Dubravka has started Newcastle’s last two games, conceding seven goals in defeats to Everton and Tottenham.

The 34-year-old has not really covered himself in glory since coming back into the side, taking Nick Pope’s place in the starting XI. The England international has dislocated his shoulder, and could now miss up to five months of action.

That has given Dubravka a chance to come into the team, but a new claim from journalist Daniel Wales suggests that the £4million man has an injury problem of his own. He has been correct about Newcastle’s injuries in the past, and he correctly called that Longstaff would be on the bench on Sunday.

The journalist has now taken to X to report that Dubravka is dealing with a ‘hidden’ shoulder injury and that the club are now going to try and sign a new goalkeeper when the January transfer window opens.

That explains why Dubravka has struggled since Newcastle return

Given the fact he has started our last two games, it is clearly not a major injury for Dubravka. If it was a massive problem, Eddie Howe would have turned to Loris Karius.

But it certainly explains why he has not looked like himself since returning to the starting XI. He was particularly poor on Sunday during the heavy loss against Tottenham Hotspur.

If Newcastle genuinely are going to look to sign a new goalkeeper, you can expect the rumours surrounding David De Gea to intensify. He was the first stopper linked after Nick Pope’s injury, and is a free agent after being released by Manchester United.

This news surrounding Dubravka is yet another issue for Newcastle, who are enduring the worst luck imaginable when it comes to injuries.
