It’s difficult to analyse Newcastle United’s topsy-turvy season without taking into account the sheer number of injuries they have had to deal with.

Such are the extent of the problems Newcastle have encountered on that front, pundit Joe Cole recently suggested it cannot be purely down to bad luck.

Indeed, Eddie Howe has even admitted to making mistakes when it comes to dealing with injured players, so to solely blame something as abstract as luck does feel somewhat lazy.

Still, that’s not to suggest fortune hasn’t been against the club this season.

Their last two games have seen them lose central defenders to ACL injuries. Tino Livramento rolled his ankle against West Ham too, while the injury Harvey Barnes sustained early in his Newcastle career was the kind the club’s medical staff had never seen in football before.

While injuries and the subsequent fatigue relying on so few players causes cannot be solely blamed for this inconsistent campaign, they cannot be dismissed out of hand.

In fact, Anthony Gordon has even shared his thoughts on it.

Speaking after the win over West Ham on Saturday that saw Jamaal Lascelles sustain an ACL injury, Livramento forced off and Miguel Almiron pull up, Gordon admits he now fears the very worst when he sees one of his teammates go down injured.

“I’ve never known a season like it,” he said (via iNews).

“It’s been crazy with people going off all the time. Every time someone goes down I’m immediately thinking the worst.”

The £40m winger played a part in three of the four goals against West Ham, underlining his billing as one of the standout players in the Premier League this season.

Should Newcastle’s injury crisis extend to him too then it’s difficult to see Newcastle capturing European qualification in any kind of capacity, such has been his importance.

Having recently avoided a significant knee issue himself, any injury to Gordon would surely wreck the rest of the season.
