Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar had a Saturday night to forget.
The 31-year-old was part of the Toon team that were beaten 3-1 by Brighton And Hove Albion at the weekend. The Magpies were woeful at the Amex Stadium, producing a limp display that resulted in them losing for the third game in a row.
There were plenty of poor performances from Newcastle players, but Schar was one man who received a lot of criticism. His defending was described as ‘horrendous’ by Jermaine Jenas, who was not impressed with the centre-back’s efforts to stop Evan Ferguson’s third goal.
Schar dangled a leg out to block the 18-year-old’s shot, only for it to bounce off him and into the back of the net. It was not good enough from Schar, who is normally putting his body on the line to stop the opposition.
He was also lucky not to be sent off. Schar was booked in the first half, then should have been given a second for a lunging foul on Tariq Lamptey in the latter stages. However, the Brighton speedster did him a favour by not going to ground.

The Switzerland international will therefore not be suspended for the Brentford game after the international break, but that does not necessarily mean he will be available.
Fabian Schar an injury doubt for Newcastle vs Brentford
According to the Chronicle, Schar is now an injury doubt for Newcastle’s next game against Brentford.
That is a major concern, as it already looks like Botman will be unavailable. The Dutchman missed Saturday’s defeat to Brighton and his absence was noticeable.

Now there is a suggestion that Schar could miss Brentford as well, which would likely result in Jamaal Lascelles starting his first Premier League game since February.
Of course, there is still a long time until we face the Bees. Schar could be available, and we will discover more about his injury very soon with the defender due to represent Switzerland during the international break. If he is fit to train and play for his country then we have nothing to worry about.
