Newcastle United’s transfer hopes have been handed another boost as one of their targets now looks set to leave his current club.
Newcastle have been tracking Copenhagen’s Roony Bardghji since his impressive performances in the Champions League in 2023, though they are not alone in their interest.
Now, Fabrizio Romano is reporting on X that the 18-year-old will not be signing a new contract with the Danish club with his current contract set to expire in 18 months times.
Talented youngster set for summer departure
Bardghji has garnered a lot of attention from some top clubs ever since his late winner against Manchester United in the Champions League group stage which ultimately cost the Red Devils a place in the knockout rounds.
But despite his talent, the 18-year-old is yet to feature for Copenhagen in 2024 as he’s been kept on the bench in the last two games due to his refusal to sign a new contract.
His current deal will expire in the summer of 2025 but the £30m midfielder will be looking to make a big move in the next transfer window with some big names believed to be monitoring his situation.
Manchester United themselves are interested in the Swedish youth international along with Chelsea, Barcelona and Bayern Munich as well as Newcastle.
On social media, Romano said: “Roony Bardghji, strange case for one of best talents in Europe. From being top scorer with 10 goals for Copenhagen to… zero minutes in first games of 2024.
“Reason is that Bardghji has no intention to sign new long term deal — from the summer, he will only have 18 months left on his contract with several top clubs monitoring him.”

Newcastle are in need of a new right-winger
Newcastle’s attack hasn’t really been the reason why they’ve struggled as of late after they put four past Luton, three past Nottingham Forest and two past Bournemouth, it’s the defence and midfield that have been shaky.
However, their is a distinct lack of a goal threat coming from the right side of the attack which is typically occupied by Miguel Almiron who has just four goal contributions in the Premier League this season.
Bardghji, while still a very raw talent’ could have the creativity and drive to make that right-wing spot his own in the future and it’s an idea that Newcastle are certainly considering.
They do have Yankuba Minteh returning from his loan at Feyenoord in the summer so it will be interesting to see how Eddie Howe manages that position moving forwards.
