Former Newcastle United player Jamie Sterry was back at St James’ Park last night.

The Hartlepool United right-back was pictured watching on as the Magpies beat Southampton 2-1 to confirm their place in the Carabao Cup final.

Taking to Twitter, the 27-year-old hailed the Tyneside match atmosphere, clearly still a huge supporter of the club.

“What an atmosphere,” Sterry said. “WEMBLEY!!!”

The defender was released by the Toon in 2020, when Steve Bruce was in charge.

Having joined the academy in 2005, Sterry went on to make eight senior appearances for Newcastle, even including a cameo off the bench in the Premier League.

Impressively, he played 70 times for the Magpies’ U21’s side, during which he scored four goals and produced eight assists.

Having had loan spells with Coventry City and Crewe Alexandra, Sterry failed to fully make it with his boyhood club.

He had received interest from Luton Town and Ipswich Town before the lockdown affected the transfer market. Instead, he ended up at South Shields, before making the move to Hartlepool two months later.

Clearly a massive fan of the Toon, it’s great to see former players still involved with the Magpies in some capacity.
