Newcastle United have welcomed a key player back to training ahead of the game against Borussia Dortmund, but he will not be involved in the Champions League clash.

The club have released a selection of training photos ahead of the Champions League game in Germany, as Eddie Howe’s players prepare for another huge match after wins over Manchester United and Arsenal.

Newcastle are playing brilliantly right now, and they are doing it with a very stretched squad. That is because the Magpies have so many players out with injury, while there is also the added blow of Sandro Tonali being suspended.

The 23-year-old is banned until August 2024 after being investigated by the Italian Football Federation for betting. However, he will be allowed to train with Newcastle while he serves his suspension.

But that was not happening last week, with Newcastle waiting for clarification that Tonali definitely could continue to work with his teammates at the training ground. At that point, Tonali was still on Tyneside but not training.

He was seen at St James’ Park to witness Saturday’s 1-0 win over Arsenal, and now the Italy international has been spotted again.

Sandro Tonali back in Newcastle training

The club have uploaded 25 pictures to their official website of the players training one last time before they flew to Germany for the Champions League game against Borussia Dortmund.

And while he will not be involved in the game, Sandro Tonali has been seen back in training. The midfielder can be seen in picture number 13.

While it is such a shame that he can’t be involved until August next year, it is great that he can continue to train. The club have got the clarification they needed, and Tonali is now back at the Toon training ground.

But his absence continues to be felt, with Newcastle light on midfielders. That could lead to 17-year-old Lewis Miley getting more minutes in the coming months.
