£22m player who Newcastle thought they could sign has already created more chances than Anthony Gordon

Newcastle United need another winger like Anthony Gordon.

That was evident at the end of last season, and resulted in Newcastle United deciding that they would target a right winger during the summer transfer window.

Eddie Howe needed an upgrade on Jacob Murphy and Miguel Almiron – a game-changing signing who could take Newcastle United to the next level.

Howe’s first choice was Michael Olise, but he went to Bayern Munich. He was a wildly ambitious target, but Olise was not the only big name who the Magpies considered trying to sign.

The Magpies were also linked with Jarrod Bowen over the summer.

It was reported that some people at Newcastle thought they could sign Bowen, with the 27-year-old named as the club’s top attacking target.

However, that belief was misplaced. Bowen was not interested in a move to Newcastle, and instead made a commitment to his current employer.

The England international shut down all talk of a transfer on August 15th, with Bowen being announced as the new West Ham captain.

Jarrod Bowen is showing Newcastle what they are missing

Unsurprisingly, Newcastle were unable to sign Bowen. Instead, he has remained at the London Stadium and shown the Magpies exactly what they are missing.

While West Ham have not had the best start to the 2024/25 season, Bowen is playing very well.

He is proving to be one of the most creative players in the Premier League, creating 19 chances so far for his West Ham teammates. In comparison, Newcastle’s best chance creator is Anthony Gordon on 15.

Only five Premier League players have created more chances than Bowen, with Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka in top spot with 27.

Bowen is outperforming Gordon, who is outperforming every other Newcastle attacker in terms of creativity. It sums up why Newcastle wanted Bowen, as the prospect of having him join Gordon and Alexander Isak in attack was tantalising. It would have made Eddie Howe’s side extremely dangerous.

However, he was an overly ambitious target, and a deal never felt possible.

Newcastle set to prioritise signing a winger in January

But when Newcastle do sign a winger, they need to bring in someone who can be as influential down the right as Bowen is for West Ham.

That will be Paul Mitchell’s goal, as he prepares for his second transfer window as Newcastle United’s sporting director. The summer did not go well, but there will be hope that January is more fruitful.

It has been reported that Newcastle’s priority in January is to sign a winger, but it remains to be seen who the Magpies will target.

One player who they will most likely not target is Bowen, with the £22million man very much committed to West Ham.
