Two 19-year-olds have been spotted in Newcastle first-team training ahead of Luton game

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe appears to have a lot of youngsters working with the first-team ahead of Saturday’s game against Luton Town.

The club have released training photos from Thursday’s session, and there was no sign of Alexander Isak after he was forced off with a groin problem against Aston Villa. However, Jason Tindall has suggested that the 24-year-old could actually be involved this weekend.

That will be a huge boost for Newcastle, as there was also no sign of Callum Wilson in training. It is hoped that he could return, but he was unwilling to confirm if he will be available when recently asked about his status.

In recent weeks, the Newcastle bench has been filled with a lot of academy products, and that seems likely to continue this weekend. And while they might not be on the bench, the Toon training session on Thursday included a couple of teenage goalkeepers who will be looking to make an impression in the coming years.

19-year-olds Reece Byrne and Max Thompson have been pictured training with the Newcastle United first-team ahead of Saturday’s game against Luton Town. They featured alongside Mark Gillespie, who was not involved in the midweek win over Aston Villa.

Byrne has made two Premier League 2 appearances for the club this season, having signed for the Magpies in April 2023. He arrived from Irish side Bohemians.

As for Thompson, he is recently back on Tyneside after his loan spell with Northampton Town came to an end. He made 20 appearances for the League One side.

While it is interesting to see that two teenagers were involved, they appear to have just been filling in for Martin Dubravka and Loris Karius. They were both part of the team that made the trip to Villa Park, while they do not feature in any of the training photos.

Elsewhere, Joe White continues to be involved after his return from Crewe. He will be remaining with Newcastle for the rest of the season as he aims to make his senior Toon debut. Travis Hernes was also spotted – the 18-year-old who has been on the bench for our previous two games.

Amadou Diallo also featured, and he is a player who Eddie Howe likes. However, that likely will not result in him being on the bench this weekend, especially given speculation that winger Harvey Barnes could be back from injury.
