Newcastle United take on Southampton tonight in the Premier League in a 7.30pm kick-off.

The match is not being broadcast on TV in the UK, to much frustration among supporters unable to attend at St James’ Park.

This game was originally scheduled to take place at 2pm back on January 2. The game was postponed due to a series of positive Covid cases at Newcastle.

The Times reported in January that UEFA lifted a ban on Premier League games taking place on European nights, to help the division with rescheduling games after Covid.

The original fixture was not due to be televised as part of the festive fixture schedule.

It was moved due to Everton v Newcastle moving to 30 December.

That is also why the rearranged game is not on television, as well as the clash with Europa League action on UK TV.

The inflexibility is frustrating for fans, as while UEFA’s attitude is understandable from a self-serving perspective, the fans lose out.

In 2022 there is no real reason why viewers should not be able to watch their team. Many supporters pay costly prescription services to Sky Sports, BT Sport, and Amazon Prime, and then still find themselves in a situation where several games are unwatchable.

It is also an incredibly long journey for fans on a Thursday night, but the Premier League has long since showed its contempt for matchgoing fans.
