Anthony Gordon played a key role in Newcastle United’s FA Cup win over Bromley.
The 23-year-old started on the bench on Sunday, but was brought on at half-time in place of Harvey Barnes.
Eddie Howe says the substitution was because of an injury to Harvey Barnes, but Anthony Gordon’s introduction certainly brought added spark to a limp Newcastle United performance.
The Magpies were poor in the opening 45 minutes. A very different Newcastle XI struggled to find their groove against Bromley, with a lack of urgency hurting a Toon side that fell behind against their League Two opponents.
But that changed in the second half after Howe introduced Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes.

Anthony Gordon was shouting at Lloyd Kelly during Newcastle win
During the first half, Newcastle were slow in possession. There was no urgency, but Gordon ensured that changed when he came on.
That is according to the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope, who has stated on his YouTube channel what Gordon was screaming at Toon teammate Lloyd Kelly during the second half at St James’ Park.
“I thought he [Gordon] was fantastic second half,” he said.
“There was one instance – we’ve got that great view [in the press box] so you can hear and see what’s going on.
“Lloyd Kelly has got the ball at the back, and Anthony Gordon is screaming at him ‘fast, faster, faster’.”
Newcastle United’s big guns bail the Magpies out
Newcastle were pedestrian in the first-half, but that changed when bigger players like Gordon were introduced.
He forced his teammates to move the ball quicker, and it resulted in the Magpies taking the lead and advancing to the fourth round of the FA Cup.
In the end, it was a comfortable win for Newcastle United, but there was a whiff of a giant killing in the opening stages. The Magpies were not at it, and a heavily rotated side did not look capable of forcing the issue against their League Two opponents.
That changed when Gordon came on, with the England international enjoying a very productive 45 minutes in the FA Cup. He helped inspire a limp Newcastle side, whilst also continuing his bright run of form. Thanks to his goal from the penalty spot, Gordon now has eight goal contributions in Newcastle’s last eight games.
Eddie Howe’s big players are delivering, while a lot of his fringe players failed to step up on Sunday.
