Mike Dean played a pivotal role in Newcastle United’s 2-0 win over Brentford last week.

The referee reduced the Bees to 10 men very early on in the game, despite initially giving the free kick the other way.

But a VAR review showed there was a dangerous, although accidental, stamp on Matt Targett from Josh Dasilva.

After going to the screen to watch a replay, Dean realised the mistake he had made. He reversed the decision, and brandished a red card to Brentford’s number 10.

This gave Newcastle the impetus to dominate the game in London, using the ball well and going on to win 2-0. The win extended the Magpies’ unbeaten run to seven games, and moved them up to 14th in the Premier League.

Following the game, the club have released additional footage, which shows the incredible Joelinton celebration in all its beauty.

But it also captured a hilarious moment from Mike Dean and a Brentford fan.

Brentford fan tries to sway Mike Dean decision

On the video, which can be seen on Newcastle’s official YouTube channel, you witness the aftermath of the Dasilva challenge.

Dean is captured trotting over the monitor, ready to watch a replay of the incident. The screen is in front of a section of the Brentford support, and what one home fan does is fantastic.

At 2:36, a Brentford fan next to the monitor whips out his wallet, and waves a note at Dean in attempt to buy the decision.

Sadly for the fan, the bribe didn’t work, but you have to admire his ambition. And fair play for thinking on his feet – unless he does it every week, of course.

In the end, VAR did its job and the correct decision was made. Newcastle have been let down by the officials at times this season, but a major decision went their way last time out.
