Sky Sports pundit Andy Hinchcliffe was highly amused by the moment Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes was seen crashing into the referee when trying to win the ball.

When Leicester City’s Harvey Barnes received the ball just outside the Toon penalty area, the Brazil international was spotted charging towards the Foxes player.

However, Guimaraes failed in his attempt to manoeuvre past the referee, who was blocking his path. Instead, he crashed straight into the official, knocking him to the ground.

Absorbing the impact, the 25-year-old was catapulted to the side, subsequently smashing into Barnes – who also hit the ground.

Speaking on his commentary for Sky Sports, Hinchcliffe was highly amused by the whole situation.

“Was that Guimaraes again?” he said.

“I said he was combative! He’s taken the referee out of the game.

“You get anywhere near me, I’m going to get close to you!

“He’s just apologising to the ref.”

Whilst the likes of Dan Burn and Joelinton took the headlines for Newcastle, Guimaraes was a key player in the Toon’s Carabao Cup win over Leicester City tonight.

Having taken 67 touches of the ball, the Brazilian completed 84% of his passes. This included three accurate long-balls and two of the Magpies’ key passes.

Taking a shot on target, the 25-year-old was equally as dominant from a defensive standpoint.

He managed to win five ground duels, a single tackle, and he also blocked a shot on goal.

Furthermore, he even stopped the referee getting the ball – evidently taking no prisoners throughout the 90 minutes.

After their 2-0 win, Newcastle will now have to prepare for the League Cup semi-final, as they look to secure their first piece of silverware under Eddie Howe.
