Newcastle United winger Jacob Murphy was hilariously captured interacting with Southampton’s Duje Ćaleta-Car after the defender was sent off in the final five minutes of play tonight.

After having an earlier chance ruled out for handball earlier in the game, Joelinton put the Magpies 1-0 up in their Carabao Cup semi-final with a goal in the 73rd minute.

Just two minutes later, former Toon youngster Adam Armstrong looked to have scored the equaliser, after bundling the ball past Nick Pope.

However, another intervention by VAR saw the goal ruled out due to a handball.

With tensions high, Ćaleta-Car earned a second yellow in the dying minutes of the match. After pushing Bruno Guimaraes, Murphy intervened.

The Magpies attacker was then pictured waving goodbye to the Saints centre-back as he exited the pitch, having been brandished a red card.

Although he only came on as a substitute in the 78th minute, Murphy got stuck in right away.

This cameo may not have been hugely impactful on the pitch, having made just seven touches of the ball. However, he demonstrated a keen hunger and desire to keep the side a goal up, as they now prepare to return to St James’ Park for the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final next week.

Having been at the club since 2017, the 27-year-old knows what it means for the fans inside the stadium.

Although he has played 20 matches in the Premier League this season, Murphy has started just five times.

Therefore, with Everton winger Anthony Gordon expected to sign, his minutes on the pitch may become even more limited.

However, the former Norwich City man remains a great player to have at Eddie Howe’s disposal.
