Tomas Soucek stunned St James’ Park into silence as West Ham beat Newcastle United on Monday night.

The Magpies went into the game as heavy favourites, with Eddie Howe’s side predicted to continue their good form against a struggling West Ham team.

It looked like a very favourable game for Newcastle United. We have been playing well, while there was the added bonus of it being a home game underneath the lights at St James’ Park.

Ahead of the game, Max Kilman said St James’ Park is always a tough place to go because of the atmosphere, but the Hammers made it look rather easy.

West Ham were able to silence the Newcastle United crowd, with most of the noise coming from Level Seven at the Leazes End.

There were cries of ‘I’m forever blowing bubbles’ and ‘no noise from the Saudi boys’, as the West Ham fans enjoyed their night on Tyneside.

Now Tomas Soucek, who scored West Ham’s first goal, has spoken to their official website and given his verdict on the atmosphere inside St James’ Park during Monday night’s game.

“The first goal is always the most important,” he said.

“It can change the whole game and I think it happened today, we finally scored the first goal from the set-piece and now we can start to do more and more because we can see from other teams how important set-pieces are.

“I have to say that Newcastle have great fans, they support incredibly well, but I’m so happy how we dealt with that and I have to say our away fans are amazing.

“Even though they are that far away at the top, we heard them and they helped us so I’m just so happy that we could deliver them the three points because they travelled many hours from London. It’s great that we could win.”

Newcastle United unable to inspire flat St James’ Park

At the start of the game, the atmosphere was pretty good. The Wor Flags display for Alexander Isak was outstanding, and there was plenty of noise as the Magpies enjoyed a fast start.

But Soucek’s goal sucked the life out of St James’ Park. From that moment, we started to hear the West Ham fans, who grew in confidence alongside their players.

In contrast, the Newcastle fans became frustrated. Cheers of support were replaced by moans and groans, as the Magpies cheaply gave away possession and snatched at chances.

By the time the full time whistle went, most fans were already on their way out of St James’ Park. That is rare, as Newcastle United have made their home ground such a fortress since Eddie Howe’s arrival.

All the noise was coming from the away end, as West Ham supporters toasted a surprise victory on the road.
