Newcastle United are going to make it three wins on the bounce this weekend against Manchester United according to Paul Merson.
Man United head to St James’ Park for a huge Premier League contest, with Newcastle aiming to get revenge for their Carabao Cup final heartache.
There are also European implications at stake, with Eddie Howe‘s side hoping to force their way back into the top four. They can do that with a win against the Red Devils on Sunday.
It is set to be a mammoth clash on Tyneside, and former Arsenal striker Paul Merson believes it is Newcastle who will come out on top.
Paul Merson thinks Newcastle will beat Manchester United
As part of his latest column for Sportskeeda, Merson has predicted the results of this weekend’s Premier League fixtures. He believes the Magpies will win 2-1 against Man United.
“What a game,” he wrote.
“This game could really open it up. If Newcastle win this game, Man United will need to work hard to get into the top four. They could end up in fifth place in the Premier League table by the end of the weekend.
“Manchester United aren’t playing well at the moment and they’re very reliant on Marcus Rashford and his goals. Someone else has got to chip in now. They’ve had some results but they aren’t ripping it up.
“Newcastle are playing at home and a draw isn’t good enough for them. I’m going to go with Newcastle to win this game.”
Roles reversed since Wembley
Heading into the Carabao Cup final, Newcastle were struggling while Man United were firing. In the end, Erik ten Hag’s side were resounding winners.
But the situation is different this weekend. Howe’s men are the team in form, securing back-to-back victories before the international break.
In contrast, Man United have been far from brilliant since winning at Wembley. They were smashed 7-0 by rivals Liverpool and drew 0-0 at home to Southampton. Even in their most recent game they were poor, only getting past Fulham in the FA Cup due to an outrageous moment that saw the Cottagers go down to nine men.
On top of that, they are also set to be without Casemiro, who was the star of the show during last month’s cup final.
With a raucous St James’ Park crowd eager for revenge and desperate to hear that Champions League anthem, it could be a perfect storm on Tyneside. Merson believes so, and thinks it will be a 2-1 win for the Magpies.
