Pundit Paul Merson has predicted the result of Newcastle’s trip to Anfield to face Liverpool for Sportskeeda.
Eddie Howe will be looking for a reaction after the 4-0 defeat against Leicester last time out.
Newcastle were in that game until Leicester got a soft penalty but at this moment in time, a trip to face Jurgen Klopp’s side is as ominous as it gets in the Premier League.
Merson has predicted another heavy defeat for Newcastle, going into a really tricky run of fixtures.
Merson’s prediction
“Newcastle need to get this game out of the way. They got absolutely slaughtered by Leicester the other day and obviously wouldn’t want something like that to happen against Liverpool.
“This is a horrible game for them and I can’t see anything other than a Liverpool win, so I think the home side will prevail 4-0.
“After Liverpool, Newcastle play the two Manchester clubs back-to-back in the Premier League. Oh gosh that is a horrible run of fixtures for Eddie Howe and co. They are in major trouble and just need to make sure they hang in there and not get their confidence shot.
“Judging based on their fixtures, they aren’t going to get a single Premier League point from their next three games, so they’ll need the teams around them to go on bad runs and do them a favour. Prediction: Liverpool 4-0 Newcastle.”
Merson cannot be blamed for his pessimistic outlook on this game for Newcastle, given Liverpool’s form and the Magpies’ last result.
Wolves have recently faced Liverpool and Manchester City, which is Newcastle’s forthcoming run, losing 1-0 both times and maintaining a degree of confidence throughout.
Similar performances and outcomes for Howe would not be a disaster, but as Merson says, the last thing he needs or wants is another heavy loss.
