Paul Merson predicts the result of Leeds v Newcastle

Pundit Paul Merson has predicted the result of Newcastle’s trip to Elland Road to face Leeds for Sportskeeda.

Eddie Howe will be looking for a reaction after the disappointing late goal against Watford last time around, as three points turned into a 1-1 draw.

Newcastle have not been creating loads of chances but Leeds do tend to leave space for opponents to exploit with their ambitious playing style.

Merson has picked out Miguel Almiron as someone who can threaten Leeds, but has predicted a defeat for Eddie Howe’s men.

Merson’s prediction

“Leeds managed a brilliant result against West Ham in their previous Premier League game, and this is suddenly not as big a match now.

“The pressure is off for Leeds – if they win this game, they’re safe. Leeds do give away too many chances, however, and I think the pace of Almiron could hurt them.

“I’m going to go with a Leeds victory here. Newcastle are struggling in the Premier League and can’t seem to win a game. They were in front against Watford last week but just couldn’t seem to hang on.

“I think Newcastle can find the back of the net here, but Leeds should be able to win this game. Prediction: Leeds United 2-1 Newcastle United.”

Newcastle got a draw off Leeds in the reverse fixture in September and can get something out of this game.

Almiron is perhaps a slightly surprising player to pick out given he is not even guaranteed to start the game, but Merson clearly has faith.

Newcastle have to be better in terms of making chances, and former Whites man Chris Wood would no doubt love to score at the home of one of his old clubs.
