Opinion: Duvan Zapata has a golden chance to earn Newcastle transfer

Newcastle United have been linked with signing Duvan Zapata this summer, and now they have the chance to see him up close.

The Magpies are in friendly action on Friday night, taking on Atalanta at St James’ Park. It’s the middle game of a hat-trick of challenging pre-season tests, having narrowly lost to Benfica on Tuesday then facing Athletic Bilbao on Saturday.

It’s an intense end to pre-season for Eddie Howe’s team ahead of the Premier League returning on August 6th.

Meanwhile, transfer plans continue in the background as Dan Ashworth looks to add more attacking quality to the Toon squad. Howe wants a striker and a winger, and one of the club’s targets will be on Tyneside on Friday.

Zapata set to face Newcastle in friendly action

Friday’s game against Atalanta will be about getting ready for the new season and testing ourselves against a strong side.

However, it will also give the Toon decision makers the chance to have a closer look at Zapata.

The Colombian striker was rumoured to be a target in January, and now he is interesting the Magpies again. The Northern Echo claimed that he could cost £20million, which is £15million less than his valuation in January.

Newcastle have reportedly been offered the chance to sign the 31-year-old. However, 90min report that Howe is unsure whether or not he fits the team’s style.

It’s an understandable concern for Howe, who will no doubt be keeping an eye on the forward during Friday’s game. His main focus will be his own side, but he will be surely taking notes on what he makes of Zapata’s performance – assuming he plays, of course.

Signing Zapata would be a strange decision given his age, but he could change a lot of opinions with a big performance in front of a packed out St James’ Park.

If Zapata wants to sign for Newcastle, he has a golden chance to earn a move.
