‘Of course’… Edin Terzic shares why Dortmund were ‘lucky’ against Newcastle last night

Newcastle United were beaten by a much better team on Tuesday night, but Borussia Dortmund did also receive some luck.

That is the view of their manager Edin Terzic, who has spoke to the media after his side beat Newcastle 2-0 in the Champions League.

They did a job on Newcastle once again, two weeks after winning 1-0 at St James’ Park. This time they won by a two-goal margin, courtesy of goals from Niclas Fullkrug and Julian Brandt.

Dortmund opened the scoring in the 26th minute, with Fullkrug getting his first ever Champions League goal. He linked up brilliantly with Marcel Sabitzer, who capitalised on a Lewis Hall mistake to setup his teammate.

For all its quality, the goal did have a sprinkling of luck. The attack initially came from a Dortmund throw-in, when replays showed that the ball actually hadn’t gone out of play. That was somewhat ironic given our goal against Arsenal on Saturday, but we are yet to witness a statement from the club branding it a disgrace.

After that, it looked like Newcastle had stopped the counter, only for the ball to cannon off of Fabian Schar and into the path of a Dortmund player. From there, the Magpies failed to clear their lines and were punished.

Edin Terzic admits his side received Champions League luck against Newcastle

After the game, Dortmund manager Edin Terzic spoke to Sky Germany and admitted that there was some luck when it came to their first goal of the night.

“We all wanted to be active,” he said.

“Of course we are a bit lucky, but when you see how we fight for the balls, which we missed a few days ago. Today we were ready to give everything to score a goal and defend our goal.”

Dortmund made their own luck

The throw-in decision is annoying, but it is what it is. A mistake was made, but there was enough time after it for Newcastle to not be punished.

After that, Dortmund just had more desire to pick up second balls, which Terzic believes was motivated by their embarrassing 4-0 loss to Bayern Munich at the weekend.

As cliched as it is, the Bundsliga side simply wanted it more, and it led to them hitting the front at Signal Iduna Park.

You make your own luck in this game, and Newcastle did not do anything to deserve any luck on Tuesday night.
