Newcastle United XI vs Chelsea: Confirmed team news, injury latest and predicted lineup

Newcastle United have a huge game against Chelsea on Sunday. 

Sunday’s early Premier League game sees Newcastle United host Chelsea at St James’ Park in a rather unusual 12pm BST kick-off time.  

That is hardly ideal for Eddie Howe’s side. Largely, they have been excellent at home but the earlier kick-off times can be difficult for supporters and players alike, with the atmosphere across the Premier League’s grounds occasionally quieter.  

Still, there can be no excuses. The Newcastle United manager is under pressure to deliver Champions League qualification, even despite winning the Carabao Cup earlier this season. 

There are three massive games remaining, starting with the visit of the Blues. With that in mind, here’s a look at the latest Newcastle United team news.

Confirmed Newcastle United team news vs Chelsea

Newcastle will be without one of their key players for the game.

Sadly for Howe, Joelinton is set to miss the rest of the season with a knee injury. There is better news in regard to Sven Botman, however. 

Botman is available for Newcastle again and will provide Howe some cover defensively. Speaking at Friday’s pre-match press conference, Howe said both Fabian Schar and Kieran Trippier were doing “pretty good” despite taking knocks during the draw with Brighton last week. 

Howe has also confirmed Anthony Gordon is feeling “good” after building up his fitness following an injury suffered while on England duty in March.

Howe says Joe Willock is starting to impress him despite some criticism of the midfielder’s performance at Brighton from fans on social media. 

With that in mind, the midfielder looks set to continue alongside Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali in central midfield. 

Elsewhere, it looks like a case of as you were. Gordon for Harvey Barnes is the only potential change that looks reasonably likely, although the former Leicester man has hardly done enough to warrant dropping him now.
