Newcastle United meet Benfica at St James’ Park in another huge Champions League game on Tuesday night.

Benfica are in mixed recent form under Jose Mourinho but will arrive at St James’ Park off the back of a 2-0 victory over second division side Chaves in the Portuguese cup.

Newcastle, meanwhile, lost against Brighton in the Premier League on Saturday but did kickstart their Champions League campaign earlier this month with a 4-0 win away at Union Saint-Gilloise.

Eddie Howe’s side will be favourites here but little about them fully convinces right now. Mourinho almost joined Newcastle in 2000 and while Benfica aren’t at their very best, he would no doubt love to make a statement by recording a relatively surprising victory on Tyneside.

With that in mind, here’s all you need to know.

Newcastle United vs Benfica team news

Newcastle United’s list of injured players includes Tino Livramento, Lewis Hall and Yoane Wissa. Sandro Tonali is a doubt after suffering with illness and missing training on Monday.

Howe is expected to make changes for the Benfica game, with the Newcastle United manager deploying a rotational policy all season.

Joelinton and Anthony Elanga could be dropped after being replaced at half-time against Brighton.

Mourinho will be without Benfica winger Bruma for the game. Alexander Bah, Manu Silva and Nuno Felix are injured, while forward Gianluca Prestianni is away on international duty with the Argentina squad during the U20 World Cup.

Newcastle United vs Benfica referee

Szymon Marciniak will oversee the game. That name may sound familiar for Newcastle fans and it should. Marciniak infamously awarded Paris Saint-Germain a controversial penalty against Newcastle in November 2023.

He initially refused the appeals but did not overturn it when VAR intervened.

Newcastle United vs Benfica prediction

Newcastle should be favourites. Generally, they are very good at home under Howe and Benfica were listless in their last game on English soil against Chelsea last month.

Still, Howe’s side do have attacking problems. Nick Woltemade continues to score but isn’t getting much help from his teammates.

As such, a tight Newcastle win looks achievable.

Score prediction: Newcastle 1-0 Benfica
