Newcastle United will be looking to build on their first Champions League win of the season when they host Benfica on Tuesday night.

Heading into the third round of Champions League fixtures, Newcastle United sit 11^th in the table.

PIF are expecting Newcastle to progress in the Champions League, and they’ll need to win their home games to do that.

Eddie Howe’s side got off the mark earlier this month with a 4-0 win over Union Saint-Gilloise in Brussels to recover from their defeat at home to Barcelona.

TV channel: TNT Sports 2 and TNT Sports Ultimate will show the game. Their coverage begins at 7pm BST ahead of an 8pm kick-off at St James’ Park.

Live stream: Viewers who subscribe to TNT Sports will be able to watch on a live stream from the Discovery+ website and app.

The Newcastle United owners are within their rights to expect Newcastle to progress from the initial phase.

They need to finish in the top 24 of the table. Last season, 11 points was enough to guarantee that. If Newcastle beat Benfica, they’ll be over halfway to that point ahead of winnable looking home ties against Athletic Bilbao and PSV Eindhoven.

It’s not an exact science of course but nine points from their final three home games looks like it would be enough for them to qualify for at least the play-off round.

Speaking ahead of the Benfica game, the Newcastle United manager said: “We love these games. The Barcelona game here was so close for us and it could have been a very different outcome.

“We’ve been in that position a lot this season where the results could have gone either way. We’ve been very competitive, we were competitive that night and this has a similar feel under the lights here. The atmosphere will be electric, I have no doubt. I hope our performance mirrors that crowd energy.”
