Newcastle United hearts may have been broken in the dying stages against Spurs on Tuesday night, but there’s still reason to be positive.

Twice Newcastle United took the lead at St. James’ Park, but twice Tottenham pegged them back thanks to goals from Cristian Romero.

Late HEARTBREAK 😫 Who was your Newcastle MOTM against Tottenham?👏🏻

Alan Shearer was frustrated with Newcastle after the Magpies played so well but defended their lead so poorly. Bruno Guimaraes agreed, insisting his team threw away two points on the night.

However, supporters noticed one player who put in a good shift and showed he’s ready to turn around a poor run of form.

What fans are saying about Anthony Gordon

Taking to social media across Twitter/X and Reddit, one name kept popping up in the comments section: Anthony Gordon.

One fan wrote: “Gordon’s run down the wing for our first goal was quintessential Anthony Gordon doing what he does best.”

Another added: “Gordon stepping up under that kind of pressure to make a penalty kick again is highly commendable!”

A third said: “That’s more like it from Gordon! Came on and gave us energy and showed signs of the Anthony Gordon of old in a Newcastle shirt. Being direct and a constant threat. Took his pen well too!”

While Bruno Guimaraes was the standout, it was an important step in the right direction for Gordon. He’s been suffering of late, and the supporters have made it known how they feel.

They’ve changed their tune a bit now, though. One hailed him, “Super Anthony Gordon,” while another said, “Anthony Gordon is back.”

He got praise from us in our Newcastle player ratings, too. We were impressed to see him refusing to shy away and hide amid his poor form and he might well have turned a corner now.

Burnley game is crucial for Anthony Gordon

There’s no denying Gordon has fallen down the pecking order at Newcastle, but this could well be the turning point he needed.

With Burnley coming up next, Newcastle have to fancy their chances of getting another win and keeping this unbeaten run going.

Great cameo from Anthony Gordon! Is the Magpies’ number 10 ‘back’?!

What a penalty by the way!

Whether Gordon will be in the starting line-up for that game or not remains to be seen, but he has surely given Eddie Howe food for thought now. We’d be very surprised to see him on the bench again.

Gordon proved last night that he’s got what it takes to make a real difference in a game and Howe must have regretted leaving him on the bench. Imagine what could have been had that version of Gordon started the game?
