Anthony Gordon learned a harsh lesson about his place at Newcastle United this weekend

Almost everyone on Tyneside is celebrating after the 4-1 win over Everton this weekend, but Anthony Gordon will probably have some niggling doubts.

Newcastle United finally got their first away win of the season at the weekend, thrashing Everton at their new stadium.

Two goals from Malick Thiaw, plus one each from Nick Woltemade and teen sensation Lewis Miley earned the Magpies a massive three points.

Newcastle United fans, use just one word to describe that 4-1 win👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

However, while Eddie Howe will be delighted with the players involved, there are still question marks over Anthony Gordon.

The former Everton man never got a chance to show his former club what he can do, with only a very brief cameo at the end of the game. So, what does that mean for his role at Newcastle?

Anthony Gordon has work to do

All in all, it’s not been a good week for Gordon. After starting up front against Marseille and being largely anonymous, Newcastle fans were frustrated with Gordon, to say the least.

The French press even criticised Gordon, and there were doubts as to what kind of role he would play against Everton at the weekend.

In the end, Howe opted to drop Gordon to the bench, preferring Anthony Elanga and Harvey Barnes on the wings.

While Barnes didn’t set the world alight, his recent run of form gives him plenty of credit in the bank. Elanga, meanwhile, has struggled this season, but he did bag an assist against Everton.

Newcastle fans were pleased with Elanga at the weekend, and that could spell bad news for Gordon. With just a few minutes on the pitch on Saturday and his positional rivals in good form, there’s a legitimate argument to say that Gordon is no longer a starter for the Magpies.

Will we see Anthony Gordon vs Spurs?

His only real hope of a starting spot against Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night is that the games are coming thick and fast, and Howe might want to rotate his team.

But, after the nature of that win and performance against Everton, it would be foolish for the Newcastle United manager to change a winning formula.

Hello! It’s time to talk all things Newcastle United vs Tottenham. What are some of your early predictions?

Spurs are in crisis. We’re at home. What could go wrong?! I’m going for a 2-0 home win with Nick Woltemade to score yet again…

That said, Gordon does have a decent record against Spurs. In nine games against the Lilywhites he’s scored two goals and registered two assists. That includes a goal and two assists in the 4-0 win at St. James’ Park in 2023/24.

Will he be able to add to that tally this week? Will he even be able to get on the pitch? Gordon will have to train out of his skin prior to the game if he’s to have any hopes of involvement.
