Newcastle United fans on social media are fuming with Anthony Gordon after Sunday’s defeat at Arsenal.

Indeed, Newcastle United now have to win against Everton on the final day of the Premier League season if they are to secure a spot in the Champions League.

Arsenal beat Newcastle 1-0 thanks to Declan Rice’s goal on a disappointing day for Eddie Howe’s side.

The Newcastle United manager saw his team denied by some excellent saves from David Raya in the first half. At that point, it looked like the Toon could record a fourth win over the Gunners this season even despite the fact Alexander Isak missed out through injury.

However, the intensity appeared to drop after the break and Rice’s strike from range ultimately condemned Newcastle to a defeat. It was Gordon who gave the ball away for the goal, but fans on social media platform X were unhappy with his level of performance in general.

The England international has endured a strange campaign. He’s been excellent at times but injuries, a lack of form and a high-profile red card in the FA Cup against Brighton have brought challenging times.

On social media, fans were calling for Howe not to play him against his former club next week.

“Be a massive risk playing Gordon against Everton with his current form and history with them,” added another fan.

One supporter wrote: “Bench Gordon v Everton. Exactly what he deserves.”

“Do not play Gordon against Everton. Has disaster written all over it,” said another.

Newcastle value Gordon at over £100million but performances like that will do little to convince any potential suitor to pay such a big fee.

While it should be said that the 24-year-old wasn’t the only Newcastle player who endured a poor day at the office, Gordon did not cover himself in glory.

As per SofaScore data, the winger did not produce a shot, played only one key pass, lost the ball 16 times and found the mark with just one of his six attempted crosses.

With Everton to come next, he needs to step up. Gordon has not convinced his former club yet, but Newcastle desperately need him to next week.
