Callum Wilson barely featured for Newcastle against Liverpool, but he still had time to make an impression.
The number nine started the game on the bench, as Eddie Howe deployed Allan Saint-Maximin as a lone striker.
It was a brave call by the manager to rest our top scorer, but there was method to the madness given Wilson’s fitness record.
But the 29-year-old came on in the 79th minute, replacing the tiring Saint-Maximin.
Despite only playing for 15 minutes, Wilson still had time to produce a moment of magic.
Jonjo Shelvey swung a long range pass from right to left in the direction of Wilson, who was being harried by Reds defender Joel Matip.
But the Magpies striker plucked the ball out of the air effortlessly, eventually drawing a foul from Matip.
It was absolutely exquisite from Wilson – a touch from the heavens. Then it was completely wasted when Fabian Schar decided to use the free-kick to shoot from the halfway line.
While Wilson is producing moments of class, Schar is trying to prove he can kick the ball just as far as Shelvey…ridiculous.
The result certainly didn’t go our way. Key moments went against us, most notably Liverpool’s first goal when Isaac Hayden was clearly down with a head injury.
Mike Dean failed to stop play, kicking off a catalogue of decisions that went in favour of the home side.
But on a night of frustration for Toon fans, at least we got to witness a magical first touch from Wilson. Sadly, it doesn’t help our Premier League survival prospects.
