Newcastle United enjoyed a rather fine time of things on Monday night.

Indeed, Newcastle put Manchester United to the sword and really should have improved on the eventual 2-0 scoreline at Old Trafford. In truth, they cruised victory.

Alexander Isak and Joelinton both scored early goals as Eddie Howe’s side went back up to fifth in the Premier League table, extending their winning streak to five consecutive games in all competitions.

While the Newcastle United manager will no doubt have been annoyed his team appeared to let up on the intensity, it was perhaps understandable.

This is the busiest period of the season and Howe still has to take his side down to Tottenham on Saturday before playing Arsenal in the first-leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final next week.

It perhaps made sense to conserve energy, particularly with Howe’s squad options not all too convincing at times.

Luckily, there was a positive update on Sven Botman after the game.

The defender has not played for the first-team since suffering a second serious knee injury of the season back in March, though recently got some minutes in the youth team.

There had been suggestions the Dutchman would return to the squad for the win over Aston Villa on Boxing Day, though that did not happen.

Still, after the win at Old Trafford, Howe told beIN Sports reporter Andy Kerr (via social media platform X) that Botman only missed the trip to Manchester through illness and is very close to a return.

While it would be a major shock to see Botman start all of a sudden, having him back in the squad is a major boost.

Fabian Schar is suspended for both the trip to Spurs and the first of the Arsenal games, while Emil Krafth is yet to have returned from injury.

Hopefully, Botman can push Lloyd Kelly for a starting berth alongside Dan Burn.
