Newcastle United have ended their pre-season tour of Japan with an extremely disappointing 2-0 defeat to Yokohama F Marinos.
After a bright start in Tokyo, Newcastle United eventually slumped to a rather concerning defeat. The game saw the returns of Bruno Guimaraes and Fabian Schar, while Lloyd Kelly made his first Toon appearance.
Eddie Howe’s side did well as Newcastle beat Urawa Reds on Wednesday, but this was a total contrast.
It was a very disappointing performance from the Magpies, and these are our Newcastle United player ratings from the 2-0 defeat to Yokohama F Marinos.
Defence
Odysseas Vlachodimos: 6 – The Greece international had nothing to do during his 45 minute outing, and could not be blamed for Yokohama’s opener.
Tino Livramento: 6 – Lively down the right and got into some brilliant positions, but could really benefit from more quality around him on that side of the pitch.
Fabian Schar: 6 – A tidy return to the team for Fabian Schar, following news that Newcastle are trying to sign Marc Guehi to play in his position.

Lloyd Kelly: 7 – It was a positive first 45 minutes in a Newcastle United shirt for Lloyd Kelly. He was brave on the ball and showcased his speed in one-on-one situations.
Lewis Hall: 7 – One of Newcastle’s better performers on Saturday, getting another hour in the tank after playing the full 90 minutes in the previous game. Hall was very good against Urawa Reds, but he did not hit the same heights versus Yokohama.
Midfield
Sean Longstaff: 4 – Sean Longstaff is very much a scapegoat at the minute, but he was very disappointing against Yokohama. The midfielder was extremely lethargic and is playing with absolutely no confidence.
Bruno Guimaraes: 8 – Unsurprisingly, Bruno makes all the difference for Newcastle. He did very well during his first performance of the summer, donning the captain’s armband. The 26-year-old played on the front foot and tried to get Newcastle in behind, creating multiple chances for the Toon forwards that were ultimately squandered.
Joelinton: 6 – Switched off for the first goal but battled throughout. However, a lot of room for improvement from Newcastle United’s Brazilian enforcer.
Attack
Miguel Almiron: 4 – It was a really poor performance from Miguel Almiron, who either could not get involved in the game or was wasteful when he did. When a 17-year-old kid is more impactful then it is cause for concern.
Alexander Isak: 6 – Alexander Isak was unable to continue his scoring streak, but did his best to stretch the Yokohama defence in the first half. He combined well with Bruno Guimaraes, and was fortunately able to shake off a shoulder injury.

Harvey Barnes: 5 – Tried his best to get in positive positions and had a few openings, but unable to find that killer touch in front of goal.
Substitutes
Nick Pope: 6 – Pope impressed against Urawa Reds, and was once again busier than he should have to be.
Emil Krafth: 6 – After celebrating his 30th birthday, Emil Krafth almost made a fateful error within seconds of coming on at the break. He was able to recover after that mistake.
Dan Burn: 6 – Big Dan Burn tried to inspire his team and play on the front foot, but it was to no avail.
Harrison Ashby: 5 – Yokohama attacked at will down his side, with Harrison Ashby enduring a very tough 45 minutes in Tokyo.
Jacob Murphy: 5 – Awful defending for Yokohama’s second goal, as his mistake put the Magpies’ second friendly in Japan beyond them.
Trevan Sanusi: 8 – This kid is special. The second half was awful for Newcastle, but he was very impressive. Eddie Howe is very excited by Trevan Sanusi, and so he should be. What a future this lad has in black and white.
Ben Parkinson: 5 – The 19-year-old was fairly anonymous up front once again, and picked up a yellow card for a bad challenge born out of frustration.
Jamal Lewis: 6 – Solid but unspectacular after replacing Lewis Hall in the second half.
Alfie Harrison: 7 – Like in his previous two appearances, Alfie Harrison was very positive off the bench. He tried to make things happen and deserves credit for that.
Jay Turner-Cooke: NA – The midfielder was not on long enough to warrant a grade, replacing Sanusi in the 88th minute.
