Eddie Howe got his first win as Newcastle manager by beating his former club Burnley 1-0 at St James’ Park.
Callum Wilson, who Howe of course worked with at Bournemouth, got the winner just before half-time to breathe new life into their survival bid.
It was a huge afternoon for Howe and Newcastle. Recent games have been billed must-win, which only ramped up the importance of this once.
The significance of that first win and clean sheet was indicated by Howe’s reaction at the full-time whistle, which the club’s official Twitter account put out not long after the match finished.
Newcastle fans have taken Howe to their hearts already, for the way he has lifted the club since he came in in difficult circumstances.
They loved his reaction to that first win, full of passion and belief that Newcastle can turn their situation around.
It is a day of great joy and relief for the Magpies fans, who can now look ahead to some tricky December fixtures with renewed optimism.
