There was so much late drama as Newcastle hosted Southampton this afternoon.
The relief was tangible around St James’ Park when Allan Saint-Maximin smashed in a stoppage time goal to make it 2-1.
But that wasn’t the end of it, as Jamaal Lascelles brought down Adam Armstrong in the penalty box and James Ward-Prowse converted the spot-kick to make it 2-2.
Steve Bruce made just one change from the team which lost 2-0 at Aston Villa in Newcastle’s last Premier League game.
Sean Longstaff came in for the injured Isaac Hayden, which meant Jacob Murphy continued at right wing-back.
The first half saw Newcastle put in a poor team performance, with Southampton the better side.
It was only a glaring miss from Moussa Djenepo which meant Newcastle didn’t go in at the break 1-0 down.
Newcastle made the most of that reprieve and were much improved after the interval.
After half time, it was Murphy’s header across the box which set up Callum Wilson’s opening goal.
Then, Newcastle dropped deeper after bringing Wilson off and Southampton equalised via Mohamed Elyouneoussi with 16 minutes remaining.
As the game looked like it was drifting towards a draw, Saint-Maximin thought he’d grabbed all three points.
There was a late, late sucker punch but Murphy’s performance was a real positive when he was able to get on the front foot.
