Mark Lawrenson has offered his prediction for Newcastle United’s trip to face Leeds United at Elland Road this weekend.
The Magpies go into the game on the back of that crushing late blow against Watford last time out, the day before Marcelo Bielsa’s side impressively ran out 3-2 winners at West Ham.
Lawrenson feels that Eddie Howe’s men will suffer another setback here, going down 2-0 in this one.
Lawrenson’s prediction
“Leeds have just won back-to-back league games for the first time this season and, after a six-month hangover, they are starting to look more like the team we expected them to be. They are still in the bottom six, but they are pulling away from the relegation zone and I’m expecting them to keep on doing that.
“Newcastle, in contrast, remain in big trouble. They are getting linked with players every single day of this transfer window, which is understandable given the situation they are in, but their problem is that they are still not winning games.
“They don’t really look like they are going to win games, either – including this one. The signings they have made this month, defender Kieran Trippier and striker Chris Wood, have improved them but not enough to change their fortunes.
“Until they get more signings done, I just think they are going to be beaten. Lawro’s prediction: Leeds United 2-0 Newcastle United.”
Looking at Leeds’ performance against West Ham, there is plenty of confidence around Elland Road right now and they are pulling away from any hint of trouble.
The meeting between the two sides earlier in the season was a 1-1 draw, and plenty has changed at both clubs since then.
This is a game that Newcastle can get something out of because Leeds do tend to give up chances but if they do get in front, they need to do a better job of keeping the lead and not show familiar failings.
