Another week of Premier League action means the another round of Mark Lawrenson’s BBC predictions column.

The former Liverpool defender has offered his verdict on how he thinks Newcastle’s huge home game against Burnley will go.

Lawrenson is not upbeat about Newcastle’s chances of survival on the back of Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Norwich.

Lawrenson’s prediction

“Burnley have turned themselves into draw specialists, with four in their past five games. They are still in the bottom three but they seem to be playing pretty well, and it feels like the results will come.

RONALDO NEEDS TO STOP WHINING.

“I’m not sure the same applies to Newcastle. Tuesday’s home game with Norwich was a must-win, and they didn’t win it. The more points they drop, even when they don’t lose, just makes it even harder for them to stay up.

“They have left themselves a huge task to survive now – they will probably need to win at least 10 of their remaining 24 games, and I just don’t see that happening. Lawro’s prediction: Newcastle 0-2 Burnley.”

There was enough spirit in Newcastle’s performance with ten men in midweek to think that Lawrenson’s prediction is unnecessarily gloomy.

But they do really need to get that first win of the season against Burnley because the rest of their festive fixtures are very challenging indeed.

There is no need for Lawrenson to be so negative, although Newcastle need a big result and performance here. The first step is keeping 11 men on the pitch throughout.
