Longstaff’s assist against Liverpool was ‘incredible’ according to Isak

Alexander Isak scored on his Newcastle United debut last night, and the goal was made possible by Sean Longstaff.

The local lad started in midfield for the second game in a row, having replaced the injured Bruno Guimaraes against Wolves.

Longstaff struggled at Molineux, on what was his 100th Newcastle appearance. However, he was much better on his 101st Toon outing, and really impressed against Liverpool.

The 24-year-old was much better in and out of possession, and provided a vital contribution in Newcastle taking the lead at Anfield.

It was his clever pass that got Isak in behind the Liverpool defence. The super Swede did the rest, firing past Alisson with one touch. The weight on the through ball was perfect from Longstaff, meaning all Isak had to do was direct it goalwards.

He did just that, and has praised his teammate after the game.

Isak on Longstaff assist

After the game, Isak spoke to The Athletic and commented on the assist from Longstaff.

“I found a good position in the box and then the pass from Longstaff was incredible to receive,” he said.

“I was just thinking of putting it in the back of the net. And I got quite a good finish, I suppose.”

Great performance from Newcastle’s local lad

Longstaff deserves a lot of praise for his role in Isak’s goal. It was an intelligent bit of play from a man who received a lot of flack from supporters on social media at the weekend.

But Newcastle’s number 36 bounced back last night with a great showing, and will have been buzzing to get an assist.

We need more of that from Longstaff. He’s more suited to playing higher up the pitch, but needs goals and assists to justify a place in the team.

He got that last night, despite playing as the ‘six’. It doesn’t look like his best position, but he certainly wasn’t out of place at Anfield.

After the Wolves game, Liverpool could have been a really tough tie for Longstaff. However, he rose to the occasion like so many of his teammates.

Thanks to Longstaff, Isak has opened his account in a Newcastle shirt. Now let’s hope he gets his first St James’ Park goal on Saturday against Crystal Palace.
